Dick Knopf on Networking Tips and Tactics
- Always wear you name tag on your right side. That's where people naturally look when they shake your hand. Shake hands firmly
- If you go to a function with your client, make sure you sit at different tables for maximum exposure.
- You have to give to receive. Assist your prospective clients with their business or even personal needs. Selling another person's services is easier and builds your credibility. Selling your own services will flow from that effort.
- Successful networking means showing sincerity and trust. Nothing should be expected in return.
- Be sure to join business and professional organizations that are relevant to your business. Be an active participant.
- Be selective about people with whom you network. Look for those who are good at networking with objectives similar to yours.
- After each networking event, be sure to contact at least two potential clients and meet with them over coffee or lunch to determine how you can work with each other.
- Networking takes time and patience. Make sure you have both.
- If you become an experienced networker, you eventually receive solid referrals, leads and good assignments.
- Sometimes, networking takes you out of your comfort zone. Be aware that other people may feel that way too. Make them feel comfortable and go for it!
